Despite their vital historical roles, silkworms have paradoxically become objects of fear and disgust for many. This shift reflects the complex and contradictory ways we relate to the natural world, particularly as the economic and technological systems grow more distant from it.
In "A Silkworm Can Dream," Charlotte Fei captures that moment of interrupted becoming - the silkworm dreaming of becoming a moth, of spreading its wings, of flight, but instead being boiled alive in its cocoon to produce a few inches of silk thread.
She invites viewers to experience the interrupted metamorphosis, the dream deferred, the life reduced to a commodity, and examine our biases and blind spots in how we value and protect living beings—especially those that might seem insignificant or difficult to relate to.
